The Katse Dam in Lesotho

A concrete arch dam on the Malibamat’so River and is the highest dam in Africa by elevation (1,993 meters above sea level). Completed in 1996 as part of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, it is 185 meters high and 710 meters long, making it the second tallest dam in Africa and one of the world’s largest double-curvature arch dams. Its reservoir holds up to 1.95 billion cubic meters of water and supplies both water to South Africa and hydroelectric power to Lesotho. The dam is notable for its innovative engineering, international significance, and as a major tourist attraction in a mountainous region of great natural beauty.
